About
Andrei Martin is a designer, researcher and educator known for pioneering new typologies around the globe. As a Partner at PLP Architecture, he leads design‑driven projects and co‑founded PLP’s research arm, PLP Labs a platform exploring the future of the built environment. His experience spans residential, life sciences, commercial and mixed‑use projects across the UK, US, Europe, China, and the Middle East.
Andrei has played a defining role in shaping London’s residential and mixed-use landscape, particularly through pioneering co-living as a new urban typology. Among his built works are several world firsts, including the Collective Old Oak, the world’s first large-scale co-living building and the Francis Crick Institute, Europe’s largest biomedical research laboratory. He led the design of the WLA AI Lab in Shanghai, the world’s first commercial facility purpose-built for artificial intelligence research. Designed for AI startups and developers, the project introduces a new typology for AI infrastructure combining high-performance computing environments, robotics testing spaces and collaborative workspaces within a single innovation facility.
Andrei played a key role in the design of Sky Central, which integrates workplaces, social spaces and amenities within a single media and technology headquarters. He was also part of the senior design team for the Bankside Yards regeneration on London’s South Bank and contributed to the architecture of key buildings including the Opus residential tower and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Andrei is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster and a European Living Concepts Council Member at the Urban Land Institute. He is the editor of Another Kind: A Survey of the Possible City (Actar, 2021) and publishes, exhibits and lectures internationally on topics including artificial intelligence, longevity, urban mobility, smart buildings and creativity.
