About
Located at 33 Grosvenor Place, Cleveland Clinic London transforms a former office building into a major new healthcare facility and the provider’s first European hospital.
The design retained building’s original façade on three sides while introducing new structure, floorplates and cores behind it. A new western elevation and carefully reworked roofline expand the building’s capacity to deliver 30,100 m² of clinical, diagnostic and patient space, including 184 bedrooms, within a highly constrained central London site.
Patient experience was central to the design from the outset. Bedrooms, waiting areas and circulation spaces are organised to maximise natural daylight, clarity and comfort, creating a calmer and more supportive healthcare environment. Art, warm material finishes and clear separation between public, clinical and inpatient functions help reinforce a more intuitive and restorative experience throughout the building.
Adaptive reuse also played a significant role in the project’s environmental performance. By retaining much of the existing structure and façade, the scheme reduces embodied carbon while extending the life of a prominent London building through long-term healthcare use.

The original building is retained and reworked to support a highly complex healthcare programme within a constrained central London site. By preserving much of the existing structure and façade, the project extends the life of the building while significantly reducing embodied carbon.

“The challenge was to transform a former office building into a world-class hospital while creating an environment that feels calm, clear and deeply human.”

Patient experience
Patient wellbeing shaped the design from the outset, informing the layout, material palette and quality of light throughout the building. Bedrooms, waiting areas and circulation spaces are designed to feel calm, intuitive and supportive at every stage of the patient journey.
