Position

We are seeking an experienced Sustainability Lead to help shape and advance our approach to environmentally responsible design across the practice. This is a key role for someone with a strong understanding of sustainable architecture, carbon reduction and design performance, and the ability to influence project teams from the earliest stages of design.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior leadership, project teams and specialist consultants to define sustainability goals, embed practical tools and methods, and support project teams in making informed decisions that reduce environmental impact and improve long-term performance.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead and support the implementation of sustainability tools, workflows and software across projects, including operational carbon, embodied carbon, climate analysis, solar studies, microclimate assessment and environmentally driven design options.
  2. Work with senior management and project leaders to define practice-wide goals for carbon reduction, environmental performance and responsible design methods.
  3. Provide guidance to design teams at early project stages, helping them integrate sustainability considerations into concept, massing, material and performance decisions.
  4. Support the use of Revit plugins, environmental analysis tools and project toolkits to inform evidence-based design decisions.
  5. Develop and maintain project sustainability strategies, benchmarks and records, ensuring lessons learned and best practice are captured and shared across the practice.
  6. Introduce and manage regular sustainability reviews for projects, helping teams identify opportunities, risks and improvements.
  7. Develop staff awareness through internal talks, training sessions and practical resources on topics such as carbon literacy, post-occupancy evaluation, design performance and sustainable materials.
  8. Keep up to date with relevant standards, guidance and certification frameworks, including BREEAM, Part L, LEED, Well and Nabers etc and other requirements relevant to bids, awards and project delivery.
  9. Maintain project sustainability data and benchmarking information to support reporting, bids, awards, website content and internal knowledge-sharing.
  10. Collaborate with the bids and communications teams to develop clear, credible sustainability content for proposals, awards, publications and the intranet.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  1. Proven experience in a sustainability-focused role within architecture, the built environment, consultancy or a related sector.
  2. Strong understanding of sustainable design, carbon reduction, environmental performance and climate-responsive design principles.
  3. Experience using sustainability software, environmental analysis tools, Revit/Rhino plugins or related digital toolkits to support design decision-making.
  4. Developing AI tools to improve efficiency
  5. Knowledge of relevant UK and international standards, legislation and certification frameworks, including BREEAM, Part L, LEED, Well and Nabers etc.
  6. Ability to translate technical sustainability information into clear, practical guidance for design teams and stakeholders.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to present internally and externally when required.
  8. Strong planning, organisation and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively across multiple projects.
  9. Collaborative, proactive and able to work independently while building strong relationships across project teams.
  10. A relevant degree or qualification in sustainability, environmental design, architecture, engineering or a related discipline would be advantageous.
