Munich Airport (IATA: MUC, ICAO: EDDM), the second largest in Germany, has become one of the leading European aviation hubs. Munich Airport Society’s decision to centralise Terminal 2’s activities, in contrast to the decentralised Terminal 1, creates an opportunity and a responsibility to provide a major civic space shared by 25 million passengers per year.
The design of Terminal 2 responds to the separate sequential activities experienced by passengers. Architectural devices, such as clear visibility to one’s next destination, help travellers intuitively find their way, independently from signage. Similarly, security is achieved in most areas through well thought-out design. Although arriving and departing passengers mingle, they seek different destinations within the airport, and thus the architecture must satisfy the demands of crossing paths. Levels separate Schengen and Non-Schengen passengers. A central passenger lounge designed as a market place and gardens provide a pleasant atmosphere for relaxation.
All public space materials are non-combustible. Exposed concrete ceilings permit the structure’s thermal mass to proactively contribute to the building’s environmental condition.
The facades are readily available series system components. Clear glazing is maximised to enhance passenger flow from check-in to departure and from arrival to baggage claim. Along the pier of gates, external sun shading screens in front of full height clear glass with a low emissive coating control glare and radiant heat gain without compromising views.
Baggage claim is located and configured to accommodate more than one luggage transportation system, and this flexibility is incorporated into the entire facility, leaving room for growth and the phased implementation of departure gates and retail.
