Institut du Monde Arabe:

Arab World Renewal

On 16 January 2015, Karl Sharro, Director of PLP Architecture was part of the Arab World Renewal symposium at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris.

The urbanisation of the Arab world is widespread, rapid and recent. The symposium questioned the crossroads between three types of cities, between forests and concrete, mushroom cities and medinas. Each of these forms is a fantasy, a way of thinking and organizing the city. Each of these forms has different solutions to the challenges of widespread urbanization in the Arab world. The symposium asked the question, “Are these three forms, between modernity and tradition, the Arab city of the future?” Karl presented a light-hearted guide to the Arab city dealing with issues from public transport to the economy, and argued that the challenges facing Arab cities can only be solved by an ambitious project for development that embraces change.
