Andromede is a new town quarter near Toulouse, in the communities of Blagnac and Beauzelle, opposite AéroConstellation, the largest European aeronautical site. In 2009, Cap Constellation was one of the first office buildings to be realized in this new district; consequently the scheme offers a sense of self contained place.
The strong, contemporary design strategy plays with shifting volumes. Two larger volumes of offices sit on two low transversal volumes, together surrounding a landscaped courtyard. The two transversal volumes both overlook the courtyard and comprise respectively open plan office space with large glass panes looking north over a park, and a dining hall looking south toward AéroConstellation. The glass volume along the avenue forms a suspended porch, visually linking the public park and the serene courtyard, through which the offices and dining hall are accessed.
Perpendicular to the avenue, the larger volumes contain offices and conceal ground level mechanical plant and parking spaces. The offices are designed to work in open plan as well as cellular with 1.35m planning modules. The east and west facing facades to these offices bring natural daylight through a band of windows, alternately opening for fresh air or fixed, with aluminium spandrel panels. An external layer of pivoting vertical aluminium profiles provides effective sunshading for low sun angles, aesthetically unifies the volumes and creates subtle textural changes, giving an overall sense of lightness.
This 13,000sqm office building comprises four floors above ground level, three basements, and is built of in situ concrete frame with in-situ and precast concrete slabs. It is the first office building to earn HQE performance certification in the Midi-Pyrenees, achieving the level TPE (very high energy performance).
