Who was Gavin Eldred?

Gavin Eldred, 1965 - 2017, earned his degree in Architecture at Newcastle University. Passionate about architecture, Gavin worked to support his studies. He travelled to New Zealand to practice, and after settling in London became a Director at PLP Architecture. Among the significant built work that Gavin helped deliver are The Four Seasons Hotel in Abu Dhabi; NOVA-Victoria in Westminster; and 22 Bishopsgate, the tallest office tower in the City of London.

Who is PLP Architecture?

PLP Architecture is a London based award-winning practice of architects and designers who believe in the transformative power of ideas and the capacity for architecture to inspire and to improve daily life.

What is the bursary?

In honour of Gavin’s love for life and Architecture, PLP Architecture will offer a bursary in the amount of £2500 to one student, to encourage the study of Architecture. The bursary will be awarded in four consecutive years to four different students.

Who qualifies to apply?

Any Newcastle School of Architecture student passionate about architecture and in need of financial aid, currently in the second year and continuing into the third year to earn a Part I degree, may apply. The details of your financial information will be kept confidential with the Newcastle School of Architecture administration, so submit this information as a separate document. All students are encouraged to apply.

What does an application constitute?

Your work: Please prepare an A4 dossier of six to ten pages illustrating your student design work in first and second year to date in PDF format.


Your financial need: Please detail in writing how you have funded your studies so far, including tuition fees and living costs. Please confirm that you have applied for all available student finance.


This bursary: Please describe in writing how the Gavin Eldred and PLP Architecture Bursary would support your studies.


Your vocation: Please respond in writing to the following questions:

  • What do you enjoy most about studying Architecture?
  • What are your plans after earning your degree?
  • What do you see yourself doing ten years after graduation?

When is the application deadline?

What are the selection evaluation criteria?

The selection will be made on the evaluation of the application requirements, demonstrating aptitude in the quality of work, financial need, and passion for Architecture.

Who is on the jury?

Newcastle University will compile a shortlist after reviewing the applications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an oral interview in Newcastle with representatives from the School of Architecture and PLP Architecture, who together will make the final selection.

When is the bursary winner announced?

During the second semester of the second year.

When will the bursary take effect?

The bursary will take effect in the third year of study, in three instalments.
