Crossrail will provide a new high speed east-west link through central London, connecting Canary Wharf in the east to Heathrow Airport in the west. Its infrastructure is of a considerably more generous scale than the current underground network and is planned to facilitate stations and trains which have a capacity twice that of the tube.

 

This requirement poses considerable challenges for the design of central London stations and their associated developments such as Bond Street Station which is situated within the tight urban grid of Mayfair.

 

As part of our design for the office development above the station, we worked closely with Crossrail to establish a civic and public realm strategy for the station approach. The site is an urban block bounded by streets with retail outlets, historic buildings, offices, embassies and consulates. The proposals transform inactive frontages and indifferent streetscape with the creation of a new urban square animated by the proposed ticket hall. The space responds to inherent pedestrian approaches and offers a significant legacy from Crossrail to this part of Mayfair.

 

The proposals have been welcomed by statutory consultees including the Planning Authority at Westminster City Council, CABE and the Greater London Authority.
